Weekly Update 12/23

In Math this week we learned the 2, 5, and 10 times tables.  The students made flashcards and we played games to help them start to memorize the facts.  Please continue to practice the facts each night at home.
When we come back from break we will continue to work on multiplication.

In Social Studies we completed our unit on different types of maps.  We will begin our next Science unit on States of Matter when we return from break.

In Reading and Writing we did extension activities.  We read the stories, Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins and The Night Tree.  We summarized the stories while also identifying the main characters, problem and solution, and the setting.  The students also worked on answering questions about the stories and did a few different writing activities as well.

In Fundations we continued to work on open syllables.  We learned about one exception to the rule, which is the vowel a.  In open syllable words such as extra, amuse, scuba, and Alaska, the a does not say its own name, but instead makes a sound like the short u.  These would be considered open syllable exceptions.

In handwriting, we began learning some of the uppercase cursive letters and practiced them by writing our classmates' names that began with those letters.  We also worked in groups to make snowmen to decorate the walls leading to the third grade hallway.

We had another great party!  The students ate snacks, did a craft, and worked in groups to complete different holiday activities such as the Candy Cane Relays, Santa Says, and Snowman Bean Bag Toss.

I want to thank the class moms and everyone who donated supplies for the party.  I also want to thank you all for the generous gift.   Have a safe and happy holiday break!  See you in 2011!

Weekly Update- 12/17

Only 4 more days to go until holiday break!  We are continuing to work hard in school, but are all looking forward to our days off!

In math we have started our unit on multiplication.  The first few lessons have been spent learning how multiplication works.  In these lessons, students have been learning different strategies to figure out how to solve multiplication problems.  These strategies include drawing pictures and arrays.  We will start to learn facts next week. Be on the look out for flashcards to be coming home each  night.  Please practice facts at home with your child.

In social studies we are finishing our unit on different types of maps.  We learned about landform maps, transportation maps, grid maps, agricultural product maps, community maps, and inset maps.  The students have completed different activites for each of the maps.  We even visisted the computer lab to do some research for our activity on inset maps.  Remember to study for the quiz on Tuesday!  When we return from break we will be starting a science unit on the States of Matter.

In Fundations we began unit 6.  This unit focuses on open syllables.  An open syllable is one that ends in a vowel.  In these types of syllables, the vowel makes a long sound.  We also learned how the letter y can act as a vowel and it makes a long i sound at the end of a one syllable word (my, fly, cry), and how it makes the long e sound at the end of a two or more syllable word (party, candy, happily).

In shared reading we read a book called, The Fortune Tellers.  The lessons this week focused on story elements.  We talked about the main character, setting, problem, and solution.  We identified these elements in our guided reading groups as well.

In writing we started a new unit on creative writing.  Students are working on realistic fiction short stories.  These stories have to be fiction stories that could really happen (no aliens, space warriors, or turning into other creatures is allowed!).  This week the students read a few examples of short stories, chose an idea, developed their problem and solution, and planned the details about their main character.  When we return from break students will begin to draft their short stories.

In Spanish we are continuing our practice with numbers 1-10.   We have learned all of the lowercase letters in cursive and will begin learning the uppercase letters next week.  In our grammar lesson this week we learned about singular and plural nouns.  Next week we will continue learning about plural nouns.  We also worked on a special holiday project!

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Update- 12/10

In math, we have just finished chapter 4 on time, data, and graphs.  Remember to study the practice test that went home today for the test on Monday.  On Tuesday we will begin our chapter on multiplication.  Look for flashcards to start coming home during this chapter.

We are continuing to work on reading different types of maps.  Students have learned about landform maps and created their own.  They also learned about community maps.  Next week we will talk about inset maps and we will be going to the computer lab for students to do an activity with this type of map.

In writing this week students practiced writing paragraphs.  The topic was to write about the favorite present they ever received.  We practiced developing a topic sentences, descriptive sentences, and a good ending sentence for their paragraphs.  Students then used different art supplies to create their own packages to decorate the wall along with their paragraphs.

In shared reading we read a book called, More Than Marionettes.  In this book students learned about the history of puppets and about different types of puppets including: finger puppets, hand puppets, shadow puppets, Bunraku puppets, marionettes, and muppets (a combination of a hand puppet and a marionette).  The students shared many of their experiences with puppets.  We watched some clips of shows that use puppets such as Lamb Chops Play-Along and Sesame Street.  The students also made their own hand puppets out of paper bags.

Since we had such a great week the students earned the reward of being able to watch the movie, Muppets Take Manhattan which went along with what we had been learning all week.  In guided reading the groups practiced the skill of making inferences.  This is a more difficult skill and one that we will continue to practice throughout the year.

In Fundations we finished unit 5 on the schwa sound.  Students will be taking the unit 5 test on Monday and we will then start unit 6.  The practice packet for unit 6 will be going home on Tuesday.

In Spanish we continued to practice greeting each other.  We also started learning how to count in spanish.  We are practicing numbers 1-10.  We made up a dance move for each number and counted while dancing.  The students had a great time!

We will be having our Holiday party on Wednesday, December 22nd.  The students will not need to bring a snack to school on that day.  Have a great weekend!

Weekly Update- 12/3

We have had a really great week in school!  In math, students are having fun learning about different types of graphs and charts such as tally charts, line plots, pictographs, bar graphs, line graphs, and coordinate grids.  Next week they will be using what they learned this week to make their own graphs!  Look for a study guide to be going home on Monday for a chapter 4 test the following Monday (12/13).

We just completed our unit in science on water and atmosphere.  Next, we will be doing a unit in Social Studies about different types of maps.  Students will learn how to read community, transportation, agricultural, landform, and grid maps.  I am hoping to finish this unit before winter break.

In Fundations, students are learning about schwa words.  These are words that have a letter that does not make the sound it is supposed to make.  For example, in the word "button", the o does not make the short o sound /ah/, but instead makes the short i sound.  For these types of words, students are practicing ways to figure out the correct spelling.  One strategy they learned was to write down a few different spellings and see if one looks familiar.  Another strategy is to use the dictionary.

In writing students wrote summaries of non-fiction.  We read a few different sample articles such as, A Baby Named Joey, and Who Started the Great Chicago Fire?.  Students were then asked to write a summary about the second article.  I am very impressed with their summaries.  When we did the summaries of fiction, we came up with ideas together, created a graphic organizer, and students used the information from the class to write their summaries.  With the summary of non-fiction, the students worked more independently to create their summaries.  Look for a copy of these to be going home next week.

In reading we spent the week reading a non-fiction book called, Fossil Seekers.  In this book we learned about three different fossil seekers or paleontologists: Mary Anning, who discovered the first plesiosaur fossil; Barnum Brown, who discovered the first fossil of the Tyrannosaurus Rex; and Jack Horner, who discovered fossilized dinosaur nests and baby duckbill dinosaurs.  While reading this book we practiced identifying important words in the text.  You can tell that a word is important if it is in bold, has a pronunciation key, or is repeated many times.  We also worked on how to figure out unfamiliar words.  In reading groups students practiced the skill of using non-fiction text features (using pictures, headings, and descriptive phrases) to help them better understand the book.

Students have been working hard on their cursive writing.  We are almost finished with the lowercase letters and will soon be moving on to uppercase!  In spanish this week we practiced how to greet each other.  Next week we will be practicing how to count.  In grammar we learned about nouns.  Next week we will continue learning about nouns, with a focus on identifying common and proper nouns.

In between all of the learning we have been doing, the students have also been working to decorate the classroom for winter and the holidays.  They have created snowmen and written acrostic poems about different winter words.  Next week they will be making some sleds to decorate our door.

Thank you to all who donated to the Holiday Toy Drive and to those of you who contributed money for students to create chain links for Caring Kids Week.  The hallways look very festive with the red and green chains hung throughout the school!

Weekly Update- 11/20

This week we completed chapter 3 in math.  Students did a great job going back and checking their work on their tests to see if they made any "silly" mistakes.  We have started chapter 4: Time, Data, and Graphs.  Telling time can be a difficult concept for some students and is an easy one to practice at home.  If you have an analog clock in the house, ask your child what time it is throughout the day.

In science we have been talking about Atmosphere and Water.  We have been focusing on evaporation.

We talked about the different variables that can change the rate of evaporation.  These variables are heat, light, and surface area.  The students worked in groups to complete an experiment about surface area.  They concluded that the larger the surface area of a container, the more quickly water will evaporate.

In shared reading we read the book, George Washington Carver: The Peanut Wizard.  With this book we focused on using background knowledge.  Before reading, students looked at the front and back cover to see if there were any pictures or words that they have heard before or could relate to.  While reading students thought about knowledge they already had that helped them to understand different parts of the book.  In guided reading we worked on the skill of comparing and contrasting.

In writing we learned about Book Blurbs.  Book blurbs are the short paragraphs on the back of a book that give you information and try to get you hooked into reading that book.  The students looked at examples of different book blurbs and learned about creating lead sentences.  At the end of the week students made their own book blurbs about the story, The Lucky Charm.

In Fundations we have continued to work on identifying, marking, and correctly spelling vowel-consonant-e (v-e) words.  We will be finishing unit 4 next week.

Since next week is a short week we will be doing extension activites in reading and writing.  We will be using different books to practice concepts we have already learned in class.  In science we will be learning about the Water Cycle.  In math we will continue to learn about different types of graphs.

HAVE A VERY HAPPY THANKSGIVING AND ENJOY THE 4 DAY WEEKEND!

Weekly Update- 11/12

Even with days off and upcoming half days, we have been very busy in class!  In math we are finishing up chapter 3: adding and subtracting.  We will have our chapter test on Wednesday the 17th and then we will begin chapter 4 which focuses on time, data, and graphs.  While this chapter does not directly deal with addition and subtraction facts, it is still important to keep practicing those at home.  We will be starting multiplication in chapter 5 and the stronger the knowledge of addition and subtraction facts, the easier muliplication will be.

We have just finished our unit on continents, oceans, and other map skills in Social Studies.  Today we started our next unit in Science which is all about Atmosphere and Water.  We made a K-W-L chart (What we Know, what we Want to know, and what we Learned) and then watched a video about water.  We will be doing experiments and activities in class that relate to this topic.

In shared reading, we read a story called Isla.  In this story, a young girl sits with her grandmother and they go on an imaginary journey to the island where the grandmother grew up.  Through descriptive language, the granddaugther feels as if she is actually at the island with her grandmother.  The skill that we practiced with this story was making connections.  We discussed making text-to-self connections, text-to-world connections, and text-to-text connections.  Students shared some of their connections which included trips they have taken to islands (text-to-world), other books such as Magic Tree House books that also deal with characters using their imagination to go other places (text-to-text), and experiences they have had with their grandparents and storytelling (text-to-self).  By thinking about their own lives and experiences students can make stronger connections with the book they are reading.  This is a skill that you can emphasize when reading at home with your child.  In reading groups we have been working on skills such as identifying the main idea and details and making inferences.

In writing we have been learning how to write summaries of fiction.  We talked about the information that should be included in the summary and looked at examples of summaries of fiction.  Throughout the week we did activities that included working in groups to write summaries of popular fairy tales, modeling examples, and finally each student wrote their own summary of fiction for the folk tale, The Silly Armadillo.

In Fundations we have been learning about vowel-consonant-e (v-e) syllables.  We have practiced identifying these words, marking them, and learning how to add suffixes to them.  We will continue working with this concept next week.

We have started our Spanish classes with the new spanish teacher, Senora Sullivan!  Last week the students chose spanish names and made name tags.  This week we practiced learning how to ask someone their name and how to answer properly.

During the early dismissal days students will not have a lunch period.  Please send your child to school with a larger snack or lunch.  We will be eating in the classroom.  I am looking forward to seeing and talking with you all at conferences!

Veterans Day

Hi this is Rachel from Mrs.Sullivan's 3rd grade class. Today we made cards to go to some veterans (it's Veterans Day). I made mine to my Grandpa.  He was in World War 2.  He was in the navy.

Today we celebrated Veterans Day by watching a video which taught us all about the different branches of the military.  We also learned about the history of Veterans Day.  We read the book, The Wall and then told stories about our relatives who were fighting or have fought for our country.  We also made pictures and cards for veterans.

Weekly Update- 10/30

In Social Studies this week, students worked in groups to create world maps.  They practiced identifying and naming continents and oceans while also practicing working and communicating in groups.  Look for a study guide to be going home on Tuesday for a test on November 9th.

In Fundations we are learning about vowel-consonant-e (v-e) syllable words.  These are words such as like, cake, home.  Students practiced identifying, spelling, and marking these words.  They also learned rules such as to use -ck after a short vowel sound and -k after a long vowel sound.  We will continue practice with these concepts next week.

In reading we read the book, Hiking the Appalachian Trail.  This book was a narrative nonfiction book that told a true story while also including facts about the trail itself.  Students enjoyed hearing about Taylor Witcher and how she, along with her family, hiked the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine.  It took them 183 days!  They also learned fun facts like the oldest known person to hike the entire trail was 79 years old and the youngest was 6!  With this book the students practiced learning how to summarize what they read.  They learned to use pictures and headings as guides to help them with their summaries.  They also practiced how to identify the most important ideas and support those ideas with supporting details.

In previous weeks in writing students have taken days to plan their writing, used graphic organizers, and wrote many drafts before completing their final drafts.  This week students practiced writing to a prompt, in which they only had a few minutes to plan and then a limited time to respond.  We identified key words that helped students to determine what type of prompt it was (descriptive, narrative, or persuasive).  We responded to a prompt as a class and practiced using voice, descriptive words, and different types of sentences.  Students were then able to respond independently to a prompt at the end of the week.

In math we continue to practice adding and subtracting larger numbers.  The students are becoming much stronger with their basic facts!  Thanks for your support in helping them to practice at home.

We ended the week with a FANTASTIC Halloween party!  The students came to school dressed in some great costumes!  They showed off their costumes to the other third grade students during our parade and then decorated pumpkins and had some Halloween snacks.  The party ended with 4 stations of games in which the students took turns wrapping each other up like mummies, playing hot potato with a pumpkin, building a spider web using their bodies and some string, and blindly reaching their hands into some containers holding things like "witch's nails".  I'd like to give a special thank you to the class moms and all the parents who helped and donated items for the party!

Remember next week is only 3 days!   Have a safe and happy Halloween!

Weekly Update 10/23

This week we completed chapter 2 in math.  On Monday we will begin chapter 3 which focuses on more difficult addition and subtraction problems.  We will be adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers.  We will also be working with regrouping when subtracting.  This concept is sometimes tricky for students, so  please continue to practice facts at home and review the homework with them.

I was very impressed with the Simple Machine projects that the students brought in!  They did a great job showing and explaining how their projects made work easier.  Later in the week the students were able to share their projects with the students in Mrs. Moran's class.  They walked through each other's classrooms to see all of the different project ideas.  Mr. Melucci even stopped by to take a look!

In social studies this week we started to talk about the difference between maps and globes.  We also talked about the continent of North America and how it is made up of 4 different countries.  In addition, we began talking about the 7 continents and we practiced identifying them on a map.  The students also learned a song to help them remember all 7 continents.

In shared reading we read a play called, A Home for Nellie.  As we read through the play we  focused on practicing reading strategies such as rereading to clear up confusion and using the text features and pictures to help understand the text.  In reading groups we also practiced using these strategies and others to help when the text became too confusing or when students came to a word or phrase that they did not know.

In writing, students completed their personal narratives.  Next week we will learn about different types of writing prompts and how to respond to them.

In fundations we have continued to work with 1-1-1 words (words that have 1 syllable, 1 vowel, and 1 consonant after the vowel ex. grip).  We also learned the rules about adding suffixes to these types of words.  Students also learned how to write a few more lowercase letters in cursive.

We ended the week with a fun Friday!  The students participated in the Alpine Bear Run.  The students were very excited and did a great job during the run.  One of the girls in our class, Casie finished second out of all the girls in third grade!  Max R. finished fourth out of all the boys!

The students are already looking forward to next Friday which is when we will have our Halloween party and parade!  Since we will be having a party, students do not need to bring a snack on that day.  Please remember that students will not be permitted to leave the classroom to change into their costumes.  They may wear them to school or bring a costume that they can change into in the classroom.  Thanks for your support!

Weekly Update 10/15

Even though it was a short week, we kept very busy!  In math, students learned more mental math strategies and continued to practice their basic facts.  We will be having the chapter 2 math test on Thursday, October 21rst.

In shared reading we read the book, Lighthouses: Beacons of the Past.  Students learned about the important part that lighthouses played in the past and about the keepers of the lighthouses.  They also read about which lighthouses are still used today.  Students practiced skills such as identifying the author's purpose and looking up words in the glossary of a nonfiction book.  We also talked about how good readers make connections when they read.  Students made connections between their own lives and the book as well as between other subjects and the book.  Many students made the connection that the inside staircase of one of the lighthouses we saw looked like the screw thread on a screw, which we learned about in science.

In writing, students continued to work on their personal narratives.  They created lead sentences that would hook the reader in.  We also talked about using time order words (first, next, then, last, finally, etc.) to put the events of their personal narrative in order.  The trait that we are focusing on when writing the personal narrative is the trait of voice.  I am looking for students to put part of themselves in their writing and allowing their personality to come through in their words.  We practiced using similes as a way to use the trait of voice.

In science, we finished up our unit on Simple Machines.  The students really seemed to enjoy the experiments and activites that we did in class.  I've enjoyed hearing about the projects that they are building at home.  The students will get the chance to present their projects on Monday and Tuesday.  We will also take time to walk around to some of the other third grade classes that did the project at the same time as us.  The students are excited to present their projects and see what their classmates have been working on!  The next unit will be in social studies.  We will be learning about continents, oceans, and working on more map skills.

Weekly Update 10/8

In math we have started chapter 2.  We have been using flashcards to practice basic addition and subtraction facts.  We have played games such as Around the World and Snake in order to become faster with basic facts.  Parts of this chapter focus on Mental Math strategies.  The students and I discussed how everyone's brain works differently and how people use different strategies to figure out problems.  While I teach the different mental math strategies, students are not forced to use this method when solving problems.  If your child is having difficulty with the mental math strategies, let them know that it is okay if they use paper and pencil to figure out a problem.

In science we have been learning about simple machines.  We have watched videos, completed experiments, viewed powerpoints, and read books about how simple machines make work easier.  We will be visiting the computer lab next week to use the website edheads.com to do more practice with this unit.  We will be having a test on Simple Machines on Friday, October 15th.  Please remember that the Simple Machine project is due on Monday, October 18th.  I am looking forward to seeing all of the projects!

In writing, students are working on personal narratives.  They are really enjoying being able to share stories about their lives.  We have done some prewriting and planning this week.  Students will begin drafting their personal narratives next week!

In reading, we read the nonfiction book, Wild Baby Animals to discuss making predictions and learning about the author's purpose.  We also learned some fun facts about animals such as how a baby koala is only the size of a jellybean when it is born!  We have been working in our reading groups as well.

In Fundations we are practicing adding suffixes to words.  We have also learned how to write the lowercase cursive letters i, t, u, w.  To help students at home you can use the Fundations unit 2 packet that was sent home.  Also, have students practice the cursive letters that we have learned.

The students have been working very hard to earn a class reward.  Our class reached our first goal of getting enough marbles in the jar to fill it to the first line allowing them to get their reward this week!  The students voted and chose to get a homework pass as their reward.

Besides all of the work we have been doing, we have also been having some fun too!  Mr. Steve from the Young Consumer program came to visit with the students.  Today, Mrs. Bambara's son, Trooper Jim came to talk with the students.  They were even able to get inside his trooper car! Check out some pictures from his visit!

What's been happening...

We have been working hard in third grade!  In social studies we are learning about communities and map skills.  Be on the look out for a quiz next week.  A study guide/ information will be going home on Thursday.  In math we have been working on place value.  The lesson on greater numbers (numbers in the ten and hundred thousands) is typically a tricky one so don't be overly concerned if students had some trouble with it.  We will continue to practice with greater numbers in class.  In writing, we are focusing on using description and good word choice in our writing.  Students will begin working on color poems tomorrow.  In reading we learned about Zebras during our shared reading time.  Did you know that a zebra's stripes are like human fingerprints and that they take dirt or mud baths to get clean? Now we are reading a book about languages and different cultures and how fun it can be to learn phrases in a different language! See you tomorrow night at Back to School Night!
