Field Day

Field day is this Friday.  We have been doing relay races to practice for field day.  Some of the activities that we did were hurdle jumping,  dizzy bat, castle building, soccer dribbling.  We have to wear a white T-shirt.  Field day is going to be fun.

The Field Trip at Waterloo Village

Last week we went to Waterloo Village. We learned about longhouses and mostly about Native Americans. We also got to play games that they played. For example, they had nothing to do with their corn cobs so they would make hoops to throw through for spear throwing practice. Also they would all get sick at times. For example, if you had a cold you would go to a doctor like the kid ones today and if you were really sick you would go to the shaman. At one time the European people came and had lots of sicknesses and when they traded they gave the Native Americans the sicknesses.  It killed 50% of that tribe! Our favorite part was when we tried to make a fire. That was our trip to Waterloo Village.

Book report project

This is our last book report that we are doing for the year. We have to make a board game of the book we read. You have to include, Playing cards, and directions. Then when we bring back the book report we will get to share them with the class and play them. I am very excited to play the games that other people did.

A Field Trip to Waterloo

Yesterday we went on a field trip to Waterloo Village  these are some of the things we did there. One  of the thing we did was to go to the long  house and learn about how the  Native Americans lived, and how they dried their food. We also learned that they made  their clothing out of deer skin. At Waterloo  we  also  got to play a game that the Lenape people would play. In the game you would have to throw a corn  cob into a hoop and  to win you would have to get it through the hoop  and into the basket. This was a training for hunting. Another thing we learned was  when the children got there names they had to survive 5 winters before they got a name. This was because most children died before they could survive those  5 winters. Our field trip was great if you ask  us .

Recorder concert

Today we are going to play in the auditorium at the high school and play our 3 songs on our recorders.  Our 3 songs are Jamaica, An Old Song, and Trumpet Voluntary. We are going to be the 3rd ones up with Mrs. Nademus's class.  Hunter is in the top row and I'm in the second row.  We have to be there at 6:40 and it starts at 7:00.

By: Hunter and Jonathan

Time

We started a new math topic.  It was time. We had to do elapsed time. That is when you figure out the time between two events. We also had to do temperatures which is a problem like,  Molly checked the temperature at 6:00 AM,  It was 8 degrees higher than the 9 AM temperature.  The 9 AM temperature is 11 degrees lower than the 3 PM temperature .  The 3 PM temperature was 70 degrees. What was the 6 AM temperature? The 6 am temperature  was 67 degrees.

Science Fair

Have you ever been to a science fair? Well if you haven't we will tell you about it.  Mason and I were in the science fair but there were many other kids in it too. Mason made an egg bounce, shrink, and grow back to its normal size.

  1. You put an egg in vinegar for 48 hours.(You switch the vinegar every 24 hours.)   that will make it bounce.
  2. To make it shrink you put it in corn syrup for 1 day.
  3. To make it grow back you put it in water for 1 day.
Caroline's  project  about was owl skeletons.

  1. You find different bones  and figure out what they are.
  2. You sort the bones onto a sheet of paper
3.Finally you make a skeleton!

Native Americans

We have been learning about the Native Americans and now we are going to a field trip to learn more about them.  We are going on the field trip on Thursday, June 5th.  They use resources around them.  For example, the Native Americans used weapons to kill animals. Also they used wood to build houses and to build canoes.  This is what we we have learned about the Native Americans.

Edward Tulane

In shared reading we are reading a book called The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. At first Edward was owned by a girl named Abilene. Then he got thrown overboard while Abilene was with her family on a cruise with 2 boys named Marcus and Martin.  Then a fisherman caught him and brought him to his wife named Nellie and they both named him Susanna. After that Lolly  the fisherman`s daughter came and she drove Susana "Edward" to the dump and left him there. Then while Edward was in the dump a dog dug him up and ran off with him and brought him to the dog's master, a hobo named Bull and Bull named him Malone. That`s all we read so far.  It`s a great book.

Social Studies

In social studies we have been talking about Native Americans. Right now we are making symbols to show a message.  They are not words they are pictures that the Native Americans would understand. Before that we were making maps to show where the different Native American tribes lived around the United States.  For example, one tribe where we live is the Delaware. If you want to find out more go to www.lenapelifeways.org!
This was our groups map!

This is the paper we are using to make  our letters!

Godzilla

Roar! that was the sound of Godzilla.  I would totally give it a 5 star rating. I'm going to tell you what its story line is like. So basically its like a giant unidentified creature is sucking all the power (for example electricity) from a nearby power plant.  The male has wings and is smaller than the female and the female doesn't have wings lays eggs and is really large. So Godzilla is trying to destroy the creatures and restore the balance of nature.  My favorite part of the movie is when he turns blue (my favorite color) and breathes fire all over the male. If you are interested in this then go watch it at AMC.

Board Game Book Report

Today we found out that we have one last book report of this whole year.  I'm pretty excited that it's the last book report of the year.  Don't you think it's exciting too?  Anyway, for this book report you have to read a book.  It can be non fiction or fiction.  You make a board game when you finish reading. The board game needs to include the name of the book you read, the name of your board game, and your name.  The  board game needs to also include 15 cards with questions and answers.  You can have more cards that say move back 3 spots or lose a turn.  I hope you do great on this project!

the book TACKY THE PENGUIN

One time Mrs.Sullivan read us a book called, Tacky The Penguin to introduce opinion writing. The book was about a really weird and odd penguin plus the other penguins Goodly, Lovely, Angel, Neatly, and Perfect were all normal unlike Tacky. My favorite part was when Tacky was yelling HOW MANY WINGS DOES A COW HAVE?!?!?!?!?! Tacky was an odd bird. He marches very strangely like 1-2-3-4-2-3-6-0-2 1/2-0. As you can see Tacky was an odd bird.

A Boy Called Slow

Tatan'ka Iyota'ke! We are just starting our lessons about Native Americans. To get us started we read a book called, A Boy Called Slow. In the book we learned that the Native Americans had very weird names such as Tatan'ka Wanji'la,  Tatan'ka Winyu'ha Najin, and Tatan'ka Psi'ca.  In the book the names they gave family had to do with their character. In the book there was a little boy named Slow. He was named that because in the beginning of the book everything he did he did it slow. At the end of the book after he fought the warriors he came back and was named Tatan'ka Iyota'ka which meant Sitting Bull. It was a good book and very funny.

predator and prey

You know predators and prey?  For example, a shark and a seal- a shark is the predator and the seal is the prey. Do you ever wonder how predators have great abilities to help them hunt? Well, so do their prey.  They have adaptations to help them to hunt and hide from their predators.  They do have adaptations.  For example, camouflage that is when an animal looks like its surroundings. And mimicry- this is when another animal looks like another deadly thing and both of these things help prey survive in the wild.

Predator And Prey!

On Bring your Child to work day we played a game called predator and prey.  In the game we combined classes to make a whole class.  There were three animals lizard, owls , and crickets.  Since the owls are at the top of the food chain they had to chase the lizards and tag them.  Then that lizard would be out.  It is the same with the lizards and crickets.  The lizard would tag the cricket.  To begin the game we scattered gold fish and the crickets had to collect them.

Writing

In writing we are doing an opinion essay.  I'm writing about how I want to go to Italy for summer vacation.  I'll give you a sneak peek of what mine is.  My first reason is to learn about history.  Italy is a popular place to learn about history. Then another reason is to learn a new language.  They speak differently there.  I also want to see my family there.

Something new in writing

We did a new thing in writing.  It is called Scholastic Story Starters.  We had to practice writing stories.  Yesterday, it said to me to write the directions to your house for an honest lemon who broke an expensive vase.   My favorite part was when you got to do an  adventure story or a Fantasy Story and other ones because you got to spin this wheel and you write a story about that topic.

Bring your child to work day

I am going to tell you what I did at my dad's work.  When I got to my dad's work I went in the kids room and saw lots of kids.   I  went inside and made a name tag because this was my first year coming here and no one knew me.  The kids and I sat on the carpet and we were seeing what we had in common.  One of the activities was bingo,  but we played a different way.  The person who got 5 things in common  would get a prize.  I won one of the prizes and my prize was a bubble wand.  Another activity was when there was a talent show and I played the recorder.   The songs I played were Hot Cross Buns  and Gently Sleep.   We also took an office tour and there was a cupcake bar and I got to decorate a chocolate and a vanilla cupcake. Those are some activities that I did and  I hope to go there again next year.

NJ ASK VIEDO

We are making an NJ ASK video so kids don't get nervous for the test. The latest class Mrs. Sullivan filmed was Mrs. Bambara's. We filmed the part were it goes, "gonna sharpen our pencils get ready to go." We were the ones singing in the background.  We got to be in a few parts too. The part I was in was the "woah woah ohh." We have been editing during snack.  Yesterday we edited and filmed Mrs. Lukich's class. Two weeks from now we are  doing the NJ ASK.

The Haunted Hotel

We just got done with our book reports and my book report had lights all around the poster.  It spells out the name of the book which is The Haunted Hotel. It has a picture of the ghost, it says the characters and the setting.  The last thing that it has is a short summary and details.  Isn't it cool?

learning area in math

In math we are learning about area and the trick that I do is length x width and that gives you your area. Now we are learning how to divide the shape that is funky looking and adding the area up to get the whole area, but it is hard because it is not on grid paper.  Since we learned that yesterday I wonder what we are going to learn today in math?

Our NJ ASK video is going to be finished soon.  But first we have to do some  editing and filming .   In our video there is dancing, singing, and music.  I think that this will be the best NJ ASK video so far.

Mystery Project

The book report topic was mystery. I did mine on the 39 Clues One False Note.  Mine is about Amy and Dan are in a contest to find 39 Clues (obviously it says it in the title), so they find Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart sheet music in Paris which leads them to Vienna where he had his house. And they find that Wolfgang had a sister.  Her name is Maria Anna Nannerl and she had a diary. Amy and Dan want to checkout her diary but it has been stolen by their cousin Jonah Wizard and he hid it in his apartment room. So Amy and Dan steal it from him. And that leads them to Salzburg and they find samurai swords made of tungsten. Now they are headed to Tokyo where the swords were forged.

Science

In science we have been talking about camouflage and  mimicry.  Camouflage is when any animal blends in with its surroundings. It does this because its predators will not see them. For example, a frog might blend in with a leaf so a snake does not see it. Mimicry is when an animal makes itself look like an another animal. For example, there is a butterfly that looks like the monarch butterfly and it tastes bad so birds do not eat it.

Personl Narratives

A few weeks ago are whole class made personal narratives, and mine was about the time I started karate.  They were fun to make and I had a great time making mine.  After we were finished we had to draw a picture to go with the typing.  I will tell you what some of my friends did.  For example, Alex did horse riding, Alyssa G. did cheerleading, and Vanessa did gymnastics. .

Sarah, Plain and Tall

In shared reading we're reading Sarah Plain and Tall.  We read chapters 1 and 2 so far.  We know that there is Sarah, Caleb, Papa, and Anna.  Sarah was sending letters to Caleb, Papa, and Anna.  Sarah will be coming to Anna, Papa, and Caleb's house.  She will be coming with a yellow bonnet on her head and she is tall and has a plain dress on.  In the letters Sarah said that she has a cat named Seal and she likes dogs too.

My class is going to take a test called the PARCC. The PARCC is a test on the computer.  My class is not going to have HOMEWORK FOR ONE WEEK!  We are just testing the test for about an hour on Tuesday,  Wednesday,  and Thursday.  I told my parents and they said, "Oh good." I am scared because I think I am going to fail the whole test, but it is just practice and it is not going to be graded which is good.

Los Dias de la Semana

That means the days of the week. In Spanish we are learning the days of the week. Like Lunes is Monday, Martes is Tuesday, Miercoles is Wednesday, Jueves is Thursday, Viernes is Friday, Sabado is Saturday, Domigo is Sunday. The weird thing about Spanish weeks is they start on Monday. Our favorite day of the week is Sabado(that's Saturday).

Since we got the document camera everything has been easier. For example, it used to be hard trying to put stuff like math or science or other stuff up on the board. But with the document camera we could put the same exact stuff on the smart board, they could even put my own paper on the smart board..Since we got the document camera everything has been easier.

Liberty Science Center

The third graders went to Liberty Science Center! When my class went my group went in the touch tunnel which is a pitch black tunnel and you have to find your way through on your hands and knees.  Then we saw this ball and it gets sucked in and then goes out.  It was terrific! We saw giant, gray fish and it looked like they had beards. We were feeling hot so we saw a tube that blasted air at you, so we used it. Basically everywhere we went we saw Bob the Builder.  Those are some of the things we that we saw at Liberty Science Center.

The Liberty Science Center

"We have to go to the top floor!" we all yelled excitedly.  We went straight for the elevator.  Not long after that we we're on the 4th floor. When we got there I saw a humongous rubix cube hanging from the ceiling. I got a  little dizzy then I walked into the railing then I looked down then I screamed, "Don't look down!" and of course my group looked down.  Then they also get dizzy. Then we all just pushed away from the railing and went to the Hudson Bay river animals.  We saw a ton of fish and diamond shell turtles but there was a part we missed- three other animals one was a blue crab I forget the other two.  Then we went to the Touch Tunnel. We had to crawl and touch our way out.  We went twice then we went to Eat and be Eaten.  There were predators there but at the end was a parrot and Garrett went insane!  Then we went to a place that was about germs and vaccinations.  Finally, we went to the Imax theater.  That just made us dizzy again.  We saw the movie Titans of the Ice Age!

Sulli's Circle

Today we are doing Sulli's Circle.  It is when you get to hold Sulli and share what you're doing.  After we're done with that we hand out nominations.  I bet your wondering what nominations are? They little pieces of paper that you write on to thank people for.  This is what I like about Sulli's Circle.

The NJ ASK

We are going to have the NJ ASK in May. I am scared because I don't know how many  I am going to  get wrong.  I'm sure that I will do fine.  We are going to be taking a language arts and a math section.  In third grade we are going to make a video to get ready for the test.  My class is going to sing the song on it. I hope I will get a good grade on my test on the NJ ASK.

Love of Reading Week

Last week was love of reading week!  The challenge was if the school could read 10,000 books then Mr.Leone would die his hair red and we reached our goal!  We had an assembly and the red didn't show up so Mr. Miller died Mr. Leone's hair blue with sparkles.  Love of reading week is a great part of the school year.

Field Trip

Liberty Science Center       At the  Liberty Science Center there was a lot to see like big fish and small fish and a lot more than just animals.  There is a giant bubble maker, an I-max theater, there even was a formula 1 racing car! There was a lot to see. My favorite thing that I got to see was Mickey the Parrot. It was one of my most fun experiences of my life.

Field Trip

It was so much fun at the Liberty Science Center. There were so many games and Alex was by that nose and he said, "How do you like that?" and the nose sneezed on him.  We saw a construction working game.  It looked very fun but hard. Nick tried the game he couldn't even do it because it was so hard so we moved on to another thing.  I felt a little dizzy at the IMAX theater but it was really fun because the screen was very big.  Then we went to the skyscraper after.  The skyscraper was so awesome.  For example, there was an awesome thing that you can be like a construction worker.  Then we had to leave which was sad because it was so much fun at Liberty Science Center.

Love of Reading week!

This week is Love of Reading week. 3rd graders are doing some activities like when we read with Mrs. Radjewski's class and Mrs. Ryan's class.  On Wednesday we need to bring in a book and a beach towel. If we can read 10,000 books in one week then Mr. Leone  will  spray paint his hair red in front of the whole school. We are keeping a tally at home and in class. This will go to the 10,000  book goal. Every one in the school is trying to meet our goal.  Last Friday Debbie Dadey came to our school.

In science we are learning different types of magnets. We learned about the horseshoe magnet, which is in the shape of a horseshoe, a bar magnet which is in the shape of a bar, a circle magnet which is in the  shape of a circle, and  a magnet that looks like a bridge. Well I hope your day is holding on to a good end for these magnets.

This is the magnet kit we have been using.

Magnetism

Magnetism is so mysterious that is why we are studying it with experiments. We like how magnetism is so powerful.  I like how magnets have a south pole and a north pole. Hunter and I like that magnets can make other things a magnet.  These are some facts about magnets that we have learned.
