Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins

Today we read Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins. It was a very good book. It's about a man named Hershel that saves Hanukkah because every night of Hanukkah goblins come. For example a little goblin that's purple with bat wings. Also there's another goblin and he's fat and is much bigger than the little goblin. The little goblin was scared because Hershel was taking an egg and crushing it and he's pretending it is a rock. Hershel lights the candle because the little goblin let him.  The second goblin was fat and he loved pickles but he got his hand stuck in the pickle jar. The third goblin had a fiery red face and a snake as it's tail. They were playing dreidel but the goblin lost all of his gold. More nights came and there were goblins that looked scary. The last night of Hanukkah the goblin king came and Hershel tricked him into lighting all the candles and the spell was broken so Hershel saved Hanukkah.

Government

town  council
Yesterday our  class  was learning about the mayor and the town council. Brianna was one of the town councilwomen and our friend Andrew was the mayor. We learned  that the mayor does not work alone. He or she has special workers called the town council. The town council helps the mayor make decisions. So that's what a mayor and town council does.

THANKSGIVING!! :)

This is the book MOLLY`S PILGRIM

This is the book we got the facts from.

Every year we celebrate Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving started long ago when the pilgrims came to America.  If you come from another country and people make fun of you, tell them you are a modern day pilgrim.  In class we read a book called, MOLLY`S PILGRIM.  It was about this girl named Molly and she moved to America. Molly talked differently and the other girls made fun of her by saying, "Jolly Molly, Jolly Molly, your eyes are awfully small.  Jolly Molly, your nose is awfully tall."  A lot of kids liked it. I think it is the best Thanksgiving book I have ever read  .Did you know that  back then the native Americans had brown skin?  Nowadays we celebrate Thanksgiving by eating turkey, stuffing, pie (yummy).  A lot of people have more food that they serve every year that is called a tradition.  At my house the tradition is we eat cake to celebrate my brothers`s birthday.  Now here are some facts about Thanksgiving:  the pilgrims sailed to America in the Mayflower.  The pilgrims set sail in1620.  The pilgrims sailed from England.  The pilgrims went on long journeys for religious reasons.  The Mayflower was about 106 feet long & 25 feet wide.  One of the women on the Mayflower gave birth to a baby named Oceanus Hopkins.  The ship was perched on the coast of Cape Cod.  Plymouth was the site of an abandoned native village.

All about the Titanic

Today we are learning about the Titanic and how it sunk. We will watch a documentary on the Titanic and read a book called Discovering the Titanic! The Titanic hit an iceberg.  The water went in the bottom of the boat.  The boat broke in 2 pieces.  1,502 people did not survive. 711 did survive.  They also found jewelry in a safe. Did you know that if the ship went straight through the iceberg it wouldn't have sank?  This is a fact that not everyone knows!

Tracking Hurricane SANDY!

This morning we tracked a hurricane named SANDY.  When we tracked the hurricane as homework most of the people thought it was interesting and the rest of the kids thought it was extra homework.  I think hurricane tracking was fun so that is why I am desperate to do science today.  That is something that we do in science. Mrs.Sullivan makes science interesting!

AWESOME GYM DAY

Yesterday in gym we played Halloween relay. You had to run and find creatures under cups.  If you don't find a creature under a cup you have to go back in line. When the music stops you go to your line and you have to put all of your creatures back under the cups. The game was awesome!

Cursive

Today we learned cursive, but only i and t.  It was hard, but kind of fun and it looked really neat.  Our teacher was so proud!  Also we are going to learn the whole alphabet and a lot of other words.
We are just at the beginning of writing script and it will get harder as we get closer to the end of the alphabet.  We do not know what is coming towards us.  The hardest letter is f because it has a lot of loops and the easiest one is a because it is the same as lowercase a except in script.

Hurricane Sandy

Today we were learning how to track weather.  We  tracked a hurricane by doing a weather chart of the Atlantic Ocean.  First it was a tropical storm then it turned into a hurricane.  After lunch we took out our  handwriting book and learned script.  We learned our i and our t. We had the best day ever.

Descriptive Writing

Today we were thinking of a descriptive poem for writing.  We liked this project.  It was very fun. We hope you like this.

Green looks like a gigantic, hairy, ugly, scary monster.

Green sounds like  grasshopper chirping in the mossy swamp.

Green feels like the needles of the spiky evergreen tree growing in the dark forest.

Green smells like fresh basil on my hot cheesy pepperoni pizza.

Green tastes like a  crunchy cucumber in my fresh picked salad.

Thursday Field Day!

There were 24 stations for field day and each station was 2 minutes long.  Some stations were relay races and some had to do with water.  Other stations had food breaks and water breaks.  Some were hard and some were really fun.  Some people got soaking wet and other people did not get as wet.  A lot of people loved the station when you took a wet sponge and threw it at someones face.  It did not hurt because the people who got wet had masks on.  Sydney and I loved that station, TOO!

Mathematical Math!

Today in math we learned about 2 different systems.  They are: The Customary System and The Metric System.  Today we focused more on The Metric System.  The 2 types of units for The Metric System are: Liters and Milliliters.  Milliliters are about the size of an eyedropper.  A liter is about the size of a thermos.  In The Customary System, the 4 types of tools are: cups, pints, quarts, and gallons.  A cup is about the size of a drinking glass.  A pint is about the size of a water bottle.  A quart is about the size of a carton of orange juice.  A gallon is about the size of a jug of milk.  Usually, The Metric System is used in different countries.  We use The Customary system in New Jersey.

Terrific Tuesday

Today we received our recorders. It is a whitish-beige color with 8 holes, and we use only 7. We are allowed to decorate our cases with fabric markers (unwashable) and permanent markers because the cases are canvas. We are also allowed to decorate our recorder cases with duct tape, but our cases only.  To me recorders are like pets (in some cases). We need to wash our recorders, and take them apart. They come into 3 pieces. We need to use soap and rinse out the mouthpiece.  We cannot leave the recorders wet. We have to dry them before they go back in the case. We will learn songs throughout the 3rd grade year and in 4th grade.

Wonderful Social Studies

Today in social studies we watched a video. In the video we learned about consumers, producers, services, wasting money, saving money, and how you spend things on what you need not what you want. Consumers are people who buy things from someone else. Producers are people who make things and grow them then sell the things they made. Services are things a person does to make you safe and healthy. Wasting money is bad for every one. Saving money is keeping money in a bank until you need the money. Today's social studies was awesome.

They played America and Frere Jacques.  The 4th graders walked around and we asked them questions and got to touch the clarinets. There are 2 types of clarinets: the base clarinet (large), and the clarinet (small). The clarinet has 5 parts.  My favorite is the bell.  It is shaped like a bell! The base clarinet has a low sound. The bigger the instrument the lower the sound. The smaller the instrument the higher the sound. Clarinet Mrs.Curtis was awesome!

This morning we had math and we did a challenge GIRLS vs BOYS.  Unfortunately, the boys WON. The challenge was in time (clock wise) some problems were hard, some were easy. The people that were not head to head  on the easel were on the ground with their own whiteboards.  It was fun, super fun, and hard!!!

ShopRite groups

Today in social studies instead of working in our map skills books we did something even better.  We got into our ShopRite groups.  Lots of people got unexpected partners, but it worked out.  We made our menus for today and we're looking forward to tomorrow.

Wonderful Writing Wednesday

Today in wonderful writing we went outside to write.  We wrote about how beautiful it is today outside.  I thought we needed sunglasses!  We had to write a lead hook and we had to use pushing your thinking.  It feels like Spring but its really Winter!  It is so much fun to do wonderful writing.

The day of awesomeness

Today we looked on a grid map to find where we lived. It was funny because Mrs.Sullivan stopped us for a second and said we would never get the activity done if we kept on doing it the way we were doing it.   Some people did not have their road on the grid map. A lot of people lived on the same road. We all liked the activity as a class.

Fantastic Readers!

We are reading books in class.  For example, some books were, THE DOLL PEOPLE,
TOP SECRET, SUPERFUDGE and even more!  Each group had a group of 5. We made folders.  We went outside and read a little bit of the book.  Each person in each group had the same book.  This subject was a fourth grade subject. We had a great time.

AMAZING MATH

Today in math we learned how to solve riddles where you find how many of a certain amount of a shape is hidden in a design.  For example, if you had a window with 4 rectangular columns there would be 30 rectangles hidden inside.  Also we learned some tricks for math.

Yo Yo Ma

Today we learned about Yo Yo Ma.  He is a famous cellist.  He started to play the cello when he was only  4.  His cello was too big so his dad made  a small one so he could play it.   He played on Sesame Street with his cello.
